Kitaskino Nuwenëné Wildland Provincial Park

The Mikisew GIR team is in the process of expanding the Kitaskino Nuwenëné Wildland Park, an Indigenous-led initiative started in 2019 to create a 40-kilometre conservation buffer along the southern edge of the Wood Buffalo National Park.

Expanding this buffer westward will play a vital role in further safeguarding the future of the park and its rich biodiversity. The expansion will see the wildland almost double in size from 160,000 hectares to more than 300,000 hectares. Our next steps in this process include:

  • Establishing a sound management plan
  • Developing a governance approach
  • Engaging in community consultation opportunities
