The Mikisew Cree First Nation (Mikisew) has lived on the ancestral lands of the Athabasca Delta and Wood Buffalo National Park in northeastern Alberta since time immemorial. The lives of our members are linked to the land and to a close understanding of traditions, history and a natural way of life. Many of our members live in the hamlet of Fort Chipewyan, and our traditional lands range over a large portion of Athabasca oil sands deposits. For nearly 30 years, Mikisew Group, our wholly owned business arm, has worked toward the long-term, sustainable economic progress of our Nation and its members through employment and significant investments in education, training, social programs and infrastructure.
Who You Are
Reporting to the COO, the HR Generalist will play an important role as part of the HR team at Mikisew Cree First Nation. The incumbent will be instrumental in facilitating HR strategic planning across the organization. This role is pivotal in enhancing the organization’s capability and capacity to support ongoing business success and growth. The Generalist will provide support with recruitment, employee relations, training and development and benefits administration. They will provide oversight of the HR function, encompassing recruitment and retention, employee relations, compensation and benefits, performance management, training and organizational development, as well as the Health and Safety functional requirements.

Roles & Responsibilities
- Collaborate with hiring managers to identify staffing needs.
- Develop and implement recruitment strategies to attract qualified candidates.
- Conduct interviews and participate in the selection process.
- Ensure compliance with relevant employment laws and regulations.
- Act as a liaison between employees and management.
- Address employee concerns and conflicts.
- Foster a positive work environment and promote employee engagement.
- Implement and communicate HR policies and procedures.
- Supports in the management of the benefits program. Responsible for communication, education, and managing enrollment. Also conducts benefits seminars and responds to employee inquiries.
- Identify training needs and coordinate professional development programs.
- Work with managers to create training plans for employees.
- Facilitate training sessions or workshops as needed.
- Assist in the development and implementation of performance management systems.
- Provide guidance on performance evaluations and goal setting.
- Address performance issues and work on improvement plans.
- Administer compensation and benefits programs.
- Ensure compliance with compensation policies and relevant regulations.
- Stay informed about industry trends to make recommendations for competitive compensation and benefits packages.
- Maintain employee records and ensure data accuracy.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive and diverse experience in the human resources field
- Post-secondary education specializing in business, human resources, or a related field is required.
- Thorough working knowledge of Alberta Employment Standards and the Alberta Human Rights Act.
- Intermediate level proficiency in MS Office products.
- Ability to maintain composure and be a calming influence.
- Excellent work ethic within First Nations communities.
Other Requirements
- Excellent analytical skills and strong attention to detail.
- Flexible hours; including evenings, weekends and holidays; is a condition of employment.
- Valid class five (5) Driver’s Licence.
- Willingness to submit to an oath of confidentiality.
- Successful Completion of Criminal Record Check.
- Willing to work flexible schedule.
- This position will work various hours to meet the needs of business operations. May include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
